METRONIDAZOLE (Flagyl® ER) is prescribed for killing or preventing the developing of certain bacteria as well as protozoa (single cell organisms). Metronidazole extended-release tablets are prescribed for the treatment of an infection of the vagina which is called bacterial vaginosis. This medicine should be taken by mouth with a full glass of water. The instructions on the prescription label should be followed carefully. Be sure to take this medicine on an empty stomach 1 or 2 hours after food taking. The tablets should not be crushed and they are not recommended for chewing. This medicine has best effects when taken simultaneously with the meal. It should be taken at defined intervals. Do not take the medicine at more doses than prescribed. What should I be attentive to while taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if your symptoms do not show improvement in a few days. If you are taking this medicine for a long time, make sure to consult your health care provider for regular checks.

Please necessarily avoid alcoholic drinks while taking metronidazole and for three days afterwards. Alcohol can be the cause for making you giddy, sick, or flushed. Drinking alcohol while taking this medicine may also be the reason for headaches or stomach pains.

You may get giddy or dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any actions which require mental alertness until you certainly inform how this medicine may affect you. Standing or sitting up rapidly, especially if you are at an older age. This certainly lessens the risk of giddy or fainting spells.

Your mouth may get dry while taking the medicine. Chewing sugarless gum, sucking candy may be helpful.

If your treatment is prescribed for a sexually transmitted disease, you should necessarily avoid sexual contact until your treatment is over. Your sexual partner may also be in a need for treatment.
