Sleep Disorder Can Cause Erectile Dysfunction

A common sleep disorder, known as sleep apnea, might be linked to sexual problems like erectile dysfunction and loss of libido.

Sleep apnea

One of the latest studies, the results of which were published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, suggests that sleep apnea is linked to erectile dysfunction.

Sleep apnea – a condition that results in intermittent breathing during the sleep – is the problem that over 12 million Americans face because of fatigues, excess weight and high blood pressure.

The study performed among 320 women and 401 men aged 28-64, some of whom suffered from sleep apnea, revealed that this medical condition significantly increases the risk of libido loss and erectile dysfunction in women and men respectively.

The main reason behind this link is, according to scientists, the effect of the disorder on sleep-dependent chemical reactions that produce testosterone, a hormone partially responsible for libido and ED. The frequent disruptions of sleep might inhibit the body’s ability to produce and process this hormone, which, in its turn, negatively affects the quality of men’s and women’s potency.

Commenting on the findings, Dr. David Gozal of the University of Louisville, one of the authors of the research, said that “even relatively short periods of CIH are associated with significant effects on sexual activity and erectile function.”

US FDA Approves Cialis for New Uses

Cialis can now be used to treat not only erectile dysfunction, but also prostate enlargement and other medical conditions in men.

Cialis

On Friday, October 7th, Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Cialis, the #1 erectile dysfunction drug, said that the “weekend pill” has been approved for uses other that treatment of impotence.

The US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) issued an approval for the use of Cialis in men suffering from erectile dysfunction, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate enlargement, and both, ED and BPH.

The decision of the US FDA is based upon numerous clinical trials, which proved that Cialis in 5 mg dose is suitable for treatment of BPH and ED + BPH. The studies involved almost 2,000 men.

Commenting on the latest news from Eli Lilly and the US FDA, Mr. Roehrborn of the University of Texas SouthWestern Medical Center, said that “a single medication approved to treat both may be a significant therapeutic option for men and physicians since many men who have ED also experience the signs and symptoms of BPH.”

Dave Ricks of Eli Lilly USA, in his turn, said that the new uses of its popular drug Cialis will help “reinforce our [Eli Lilly's] commitment to providing medical innovation in the area of men’s health.”

Prostate Cancer Treatment Consequences Can Now Be Predicted

American scientists are now able to predict the likelihood of erectile dysfunction that might develop in men suffering from prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer and ED

A recent study performed by the Cancer of the Prostate Strategic Urologic Research Endeavor revealed that it is possible to predict the consequences of prostate cancer treatment.

Earlier, patients suffering from prostate cancer were unable to get a picture of what sexual problems they might face after treatment.

Now, scientists have developed models that allow to predict the development of erectile dysfunction after such treatment methods as include prostatectomy, external radiotherapy and brachytherapy.

The study found out that the quality of erections depends not only on the cancer treatment method, but also on the patient’s age, cancer stage and sexual life habits.

Comments to the study suggest that “Erectile dysfunction is a well-recognized consequence of primary prostate cancer treatment. Accurate prediction of this adverse sexual HRQOL outcome is pivotal to set appropriate expectations and facilitate medical decision-making. Our findings address this need by providing a validated, broadly applicable framework to predict the probability of long-term, post treatment erectile dysfunction for individual patients.”

More details about the study can be found in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Live Healthy and Stay Virile

America scientists found out that healthy lifestyles can help men avoid not only heart problems, but also sexual disorders like erectile dysfunction.

Healthy eating reduces the risk of ED

A recent study by researchers of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, revealed that healthy lifestyles like a fruit and vegetable diet, stable weight and regular exercises help to reduce the risk of not only heart attack and stroke, but also of erectile dysfunction.

The study was performed among 740 men aged 55 and showed that patients with better lifestyles (natural or medication-based) improved the erection and lowered blood cholesterol levels.

Commenting on the findings, Dr Stephen L. Kopecky, one of the researchers, said that the risk factors for ED ad heart attack are almost the same. Thy include obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, diabetes, smoking and poor diet. His colleague, Thomas A. Pearson, who co-authored the study, highlighted that healthy lifestyles are very important for men who care about such things as sexual function. He said that many men do not get concerned when they are told that unhealthy lifestyles cause cancer of stroke. However, when it comes to sexual function, they usually get alarmed.

Dr Suzanne Steinbaum of Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC, said that “We all want to grow old gracefully and for men, the motivation may be to stay virile.”

Ladies’ Social Habits Might Lead to Erectile Dysfunction in Men

American scientists believe that erectile dysfunction can be caused not only by medical and psychological factors, but also by social ones.

Jealousy

The new research by scientists from Cornell University and University of Chicago suggests that men may experience sexual disorders like erectile dysfunction when their female partners have more communication with men’s best friends.

Researchers call this phenomenon “partner betwenness,” because the woman seems to come between the man and his friends. Commenting on the findings, leaders of the research, Benjamin Cornwell and Edward Laumann, say: “Men who experience partner betweenness in their joint relationships are more likely to have trouble getting or maintaining an erection and are also more likely to experience difficulty achieving orgasm during sex.”

Researchers point out that there is much more to erectile dysfunction than it is believed to be. As such, those are not only psychological and medical factors that determine ED, but also social. Cornwell and Laumann think that “partner betwenness” undermines men’s perception of traditional masculanity and ruins their privacy.

The research was carried in 2005-2006 among 3,005 Americans aged 57-85. The data was provided by the University of Chicago based on its National Social Life, Health and Aging Project.

Smoking Might Cause Erectile Dysfunction

Kuala Lumpur doctor is determined that smoking, both, active and passive, significantly increases the risk of sexual disorders like erectile dysfunction, infertility and low sex drive.

Smoking Linked to ED

Research carried out by Dr. Ismail Tambi, clinical andrologist at Damai Service Hospital in Kuala Lumpur, revealed that smoking is strongly linked to sexual disorders.

His findings are based on his own medical practice. As such, Dr. Tambi saw a lot of smokers seeking medical help for treatment of such sexual disorders as erectile dysfunction, infertility, and low sperm count.

Dr. Tambi highlighted that those were not only active smokers, but also passive smokers, who were exposed to sexual disorders. The second group of smokers, however, was easier to deal with as they only needed to change their company, not their habits, to improve the sexual function.

He also mentioned that age was a significant factor when it came to sexual disorders and smoking. As such, fertility problems were mostly seen in young smoking men (aged 20+), whereas ED and poor sexual performance was mainly seen in men aged 30-40.

Dr. Ismail Tambi says that smoking is not the only factor that causes erectile dysfunction and other problems. But it significantly increases the risk of sexual disorders. “Different people react differently to smoking according to their genes.”

Erectile Dysfunction Linked to Problems with Orgasm and Ejaculation

A recent study showed that erectile dysfunction is not the only problem that men face; oftentimes, ED is coupled by problems with orgasm and ejaculation.

Sexual disorders

Results of the recent research, published on August 23rd in the British Journal of Urology International, suggest that men suffering from erectile dysfunction oftentimes face other sexual problems as well.

As such, the study showed that 65% and 58% of men with ED have problems with orgasm and ejaculation accordingly. Unlike erectile dysfunction, these conditions cannot be treated with pills like Viagra or Cialis and need to be addressed in another way.

“Conditions such as orgasm and ejaculation problems are physiologically complicated to treat,” says Andrew Kramer of the University of Maryland Medical Center. He thinks that a drug, which will help men get orgasm, will not be developed any time soon. Therefore, those are psychological problems associated with ejaculation and orgasm that have to be resolved first.

The study was carried out among 12,000 men diagnosed with ED, so its results should be considered as significant.

The study was sponsored by Eli Lilly, the pharmaceutical company that developed Cialis, one of the most popular ED treatments.
