Erectile Dysfunction Is a Bless, Not a Curse

In the opinion of some doctors, erectile dysfunction is not a disease but rather a natural mechanism for prevention of mutations in babies.

A recent article published by Dr. Persadsingh, skin specialist and author of Acne in Black Women and The Hair in Black Women, in Jamaica Observer suggests that erectile dysfunction might be a bless rather than a curse.

He says that there a special reason why impotence is so widespread among elderly men in all countries and in all societies. In his opinion, the reason is very simple: to prevent people from passing on mutations.

According to Dr. Persadsingh, men’s genes mutate as they get older. If sperm damaged by age fertilizes healthy eggs from a female, then chances are that damaged babies will be born. Dr. Persadsingh says that statistics shows that there are more risks for babies. As such, there are 27% more chances for a spontaneous abortion and two times more chances for foetal loss.

Babies, born from men aged 50 and over, are more prone to cleft palates, schizophrenia and even leukaemia conditions.

Dr. Persadsingh highlights that there are other natural mechanisms that prevent pregnancy from elderly man, except for erectile dysfunction. One of them is the fertilization rate, which is somewhat 23-38% lower in men over 50.

College Students Suffer from Erectile Dysfunction

ED in young men

Researchers from Chicago found out that up to 25% of college students suffer from erectile dysfunction because of drug abuse, stress, bad habits and vascular diseases.

Research by Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago revealed that erectile dysfunction affects not only elderly men, but is also quite common in college students.

As such, the research demonstrated that 13% of all young respondents have occasional ED symptoms. This figure is almost twice as high (25%) in those young men who consume alcohol regularly.

These findings let the researchers to a conclusion that erectile dysfunction pills are consumed not only by men aged 50+ , but also by college students. The opinion poll revealed that, indeed, 6% of young men have taken Viagra, Cialis or Levitra at least once in their lives to fight ED symptoms.

According to scientists, there are several reasons why erectile dysfunction develops in men so early.

Reason #1 is the use of drugs like marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamine.

Reason #2 is psychological factors, like stress, anxiety and depression, which account for 33% of cases.

Reason #3 is vascular diseases, which account for as much as 75% of all ED cases.

Reason #4 is habits. Smoking and inactivity can have a negative effect on men’s sexual health.

Researchers recommend that young men pay close attention to their health and seek treatment as soon as they notice the first symptoms of ED. This sexual disease is so widespread among the young because they usually ignore it, unlike older men.

Pharmaceutical Companies Come Up with New ED Pills

Staxyn.

The latest overview of the pharmaceutical market revealed that the close the patent expiration date is, the more inventive manufacturers of erectile dysfunction drugs become.

For instance, Pfizer recently introduced a new version of Viagra in Mexico. Viagra Jet, the chewable pill that acts faster, was introduced on the Latin American market and soon might be marketed in other countries of the developing world.

Another pharmaceutical company, Bayer, has introduced its ED pill Levitra as a dissolvable tablet in 9 European countries. In May it is expected to be marketed in the United States under the name of Staxyn.

Finally, Cialis by Eli Lilly, is expected to become the best-selling erectile dysfunction pill in 2011. It has become very popular among men for the longevity of its effect (36 hours).

Commenting on the current market trends, Dr. Alukal of the New York University School of Medicine, said that “a newer product, less expensive, and a new form of taking it — all that might convince more people to try it.”

Let us remind that last year total sales of erectile dysfunction pills rose by 6.9% to $5 billion, according to data by IMS Health.

Asthma Might Be Linked to Erectile Dysfunction

Researchers from a university in Taipei recently revealed that one of the possible risk factors for erectile dysfunction is asthma.

Asthma and ED

According to the results of a study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, asthma may be one the risk factors for a widespread sexual disorder in men, ED.

The study was carried out by Kun-Ta Chou, M.D. and his colleagues from National Yang-Ming University in Taipei among 17,302 men aged 18-55. Of these sampled patients 3,466 were recently diagnosed with asthma while 13,836 did not suffer from this disorder.

The results revealed that asthma increases the risk of erectile dysfunction by 1.9 times independent of age. It also demonstrated that the risk of ED increases as the severity of asthma grows.

Commenting on the findings, the researchers said that “Asthma may be a significant risk factor for ED, and the risk probably increased in accordance with asthma severity. Whether intensive treatment for asthma can slow the development or progression of ED warrants further investigation.”

The full version of the report by Kun-Ta Chou and colleagues can be found in the Journal of Sexual Medicine or online.

Eli Lilly Denies Eyesight Problems Caused by Cialis

New study financed by the manufacturer of Cialis, Eli Lilly, revealed that earlier reports claiming ED drugs cause eye problems, are groundless.

Cialis and eye problems

A study financed by Eli Lilly, manufacturer of Cialis, revealed that there is no link between eye problems and the use of PDE-5 erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra, Levitra and Cialis.

The study was carried out for 6 months and involved 250 men. Men were split into 3 groups, one of which received daily dosage of Cialis, and two others – daily dosage of Viagra and placebo medication accordingly.

Of 250 men, only 194 finished the program and demonstrated no significant vision changes.

The results of the research were published in Archives of Ophthalmology.

Let us remind that earlier it was reported that erectile dysfunction drugs are closely linked with blue-tinged and/or blurred vision.

According to scientists, the number of reported cases of eye problems is tiny compared to the scale of ED pills use. They also highlight that the reported cases might well be linked to the natural process eyesight changes caused by old age.

To make sure Viagra, Cialis and other ED drugs do not cause unwanted side effects, please, consult your physician.

Cialis Can Be Used to Treat Rare Blood Disease

US doctors carried out a research, which showed that Cialis – ED medication – is great for treating Raynaud’s disease, a rare blood condition.

A recent research by the American College of Rheumatolgy showed that Cialis, a popular drug for treatment of erectile dysfunction, can be used to treat a rare blood condition.

Raynaud’s disease, a condition that results in closing of blood vessels when patient is exposed to cold or stress. In certain cases, this disease might lead to finger ulcers and scarring.

This disorder is very rare and is only found in 5% of US population. Cialis is one of the few drugs that can help treat this disease.

The research carried out among 53 patients. Half of the group was prescribed with Cialis, another half – with Placebo. Cialis worked in 77% of cases with no side effects observed in patients.

The mechanism of action is as follows: Cialis opens up blood vessels and, thus, improves blood flow to fingers and toes.

A similar study was carried out by the University of Manchester among 57 patients.

Doctors are determined that these studies can significantly improve the treatment of patients suffering from Raynaud’s disease.

Painkillers Might Cause Erectile Dysfunction

Research carried out in Ghana suggests that painkillers significantly increase the risk of erectile dysfunction in men.

ED and painkillers

The latest research carried out by urologist J.E. Mensah from the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana revealed that regular use of painkillers like Aspirin and Ibuprofen increases the risk of erectile dysfunction in men.

In his interview to Daily Graphic, a Ghana-based newspaper, Dr. Mensah said that “those who take the painkiller once in a while when in pain are not so much at risk as those who take them regularly for a long time.”

A similar research was earlier carried out by Kaiser Permanente, US-based health insurance provider. It revealed that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen and others increase the risk of ED by 22% if taken for more than 3 months. The study was carried among almost 81,000 men aged 45-69.

Commenting on the findings of both studies, Dr. Mensah said that people should not turn to self-treatment under any circumstances. He highlighted that young people, who use prescription drugs without proper examination by a doctor, have a lot of reserve; however, older patients do not have this reserve and face significant problems.

As such, he warned that men taking any prescription “drugs without prescription … are calling for trouble.”

Let us remind that other causes of erectile dysfunction, which have been found by doctors, include: damage to tissues, muscles, nerves and arteries, heart problems and stress.
