Viagra Can Help Treat Diastolic Heart Failure

German scientists found out that Viagra, the erectile dysfunction drug, can help patients with diastolic heart failure as it relaxes the heart.

The latest studies revealed that Viagra, the number one impotence drug in the world, is a great way to help patients suffering from diastolic heart failure.

This condition is characterized by abnormally inflexive ventricles that cannot get enough blood, which causes breathing difficulties.

Viagra is used to relax the heart due to the special enzyme that affects heart muscle cells.

The author of the study, Dr. Wolfgang Linke of the Ruhr Universitat Bochum in Bochum, Germany, said: “We have developed a therapy in an animal model that, for the first time, also raises hopes for the successful treatment of patients.”

The results of the study, which was held among dogs with diastolic heart failure, were published in late December in the Circulation journal.

Dr. Wolfgang Linke highlighted that the scientists already have “a molecular mechanism on hand to explain the effect” behind Viagra and that they plan to continue with the research.

This time, it was Cerys Small, a baby girl with a severe heart condition born in Newport, South Wales. The lack of blood circulation almost resulted in the baby’s death as the girl lived through 3 heart surgeries, none of which helped.

It was Viagra, the popular treatment for erectile dysfunction, that helped improve the blood circulation in the baby Cerys Small.

Since the baby has other health problems, which include but are not limited to complications with stomach and bowels, she will need to have further operations.

The girl will be prescribed Viagra till she reaches 5 years old and becomes strong enough to survive through a series of other surgeries.

Cerys’ family is very grateful to the doctors at the Bristol hospital who helped saved the baby’s life. So, the family members (Kerrie the mother, Gareth the father, and Evan and Megan the siblings) have raised 1,750 pounds ($2,730) to buy new equipment for the Bristol hospital.

Cialis Can Be Used to Treat Rare Blood Disease

US doctors carried out a research, which showed that Cialis – ED medication – is great for treating Raynaud’s disease, a rare blood condition.

A recent research by the American College of Rheumatolgy showed that Cialis, a popular drug for treatment of erectile dysfunction, can be used to treat a rare blood condition.

Raynaud’s disease, a condition that results in closing of blood vessels when patient is exposed to cold or stress. In certain cases, this disease might lead to finger ulcers and scarring.

This disorder is very rare and is only found in 5% of US population. Cialis is one of the few drugs that can help treat this disease.

The research carried out among 53 patients. Half of the group was prescribed with Cialis, another half – with Placebo. Cialis worked in 77% of cases with no side effects observed in patients.

The mechanism of action is as follows: Cialis opens up blood vessels and, thus, improves blood flow to fingers and toes.

A similar study was carried out by the University of Manchester among 57 patients.

Doctors are determined that these studies can significantly improve the treatment of patients suffering from Raynaud’s disease.

Medics Debunked the Myth about the Safety of Hookah Smoking

Hookah smoking is as dangerous for your health as cigarette smoking provoking harmful effect of poisonous substances including carbon monoxide and nicotine, as the scientists from Virginia University and American University in Beirut (Lebanon).

Hookah, as well as tobacco may lead to heart diseases and nicotine addiction, affirm the specialists. During the last 8 – 10 years the popularity of hookah in western countries has raised greatly, especially among the youths from 18 to 24. The majority of young people are sure that hookah contains less nicotine and gums than tobacco, so has no obvious dangerous effects. Medics have found exact scientific results contradicting the myth about the safety of hookah smoking: according to the results of their studies, hookah smoke contains the same harmful chemicals as cigarettes do, and raises the risk of cardiovascular dysfunction and development of nicotine addiction.

During a two-year period the doctors have been observing hookah smokers in Lebanon aged from 18 to 50. Each volunteer was smoking tobacco for 45 minutes, first with the help of hookah, then he had to smoke one cigarette. The levels of nicotine and carbon monoxide in the participants’ blood were immediately measured, and cardiac rhythm was fixed. It turned out that the concentration of carbon monoxide during hookah smoking was three time higher in comparison with one smoked cigarette. The peak levels of nicotine were the same both in case of hookah and cigarette smoking. Analyzing the quantity and amount of each draw, smoke inhalation is 48 times higher during hookah smoking in comparison with cigarettes. Besides, hookah smoke contains substances promoting the development of cancer and other dangerous diseases, as the medics warn.

Scientists Proved the Effectiveness of Marijuana in Case of Multiple Sclerosis

American scientists proved that the extracts of marijuana effectively oppress the symptoms of multiple sclerosis and, as a result, can be used for the treatment of this desease, the Psych Org reports.

Meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled researches by the scientists from Los Angeles Global Neuroscience Initiative Foundation (GNIF) showed that five from six researches testify to the lowering of spasticity and increase in range of motions among the patient suffering from MS if they take the extracts of redroot (Cannabis sativa).

Active substances of the extracts were elta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

Spasticity - an involuntary increase in muscle tone or rapid muscle contractions – is one of the more common and distressing symptoms of MS. The existing methods of spasticity reducing are difficult to obtain, cause serious side effects, and ineffective.

Meta-analysis has shown that the quantity of appearance of side effects due to marijuana extracts taking connected with cannabinoids affect psychic widely varies depending on the dosage. But according to the results of the studies, similar effects were observed during placebo taking.

One of the authors of the research, Shaheen Lakhan, commented on the received data the following way: “The therapeutic potential of cannabinoids in MS appears to be comprehensive, and should be given considerable attention”.

The results of the study are published in the scientific magazine “BMC Neurology”.
